Dream Stealers

The German philosopher Goethe wrote:

‘…Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it.
Boldness has genius, magic and power in it…’

What a powerful thought! Imagine its impact on our lives if we made this the mantra and corner stone of our existence? Unfortunately, we are surrounded by people who choose to use their influence and their positions carelessly. They say and do things in haste, spreading anxiety and fear instead of encouragement and hope. They steal our dreams and sometimes make us feel we’re not good enough.

Each of us harbors dreams and aspirations that are personal and private and it’s the possibility of having those dreams come true that make life interesting and worthwhile. They give us something to hope for, something to look forward to and a future to aspire towards. That’s why it irritates the hell out of me when insensitive people rubbish another’s dreams or are quick to dismiss the possibility of turning one’s dream into a reality.

People shouldn’t let anyone make them believe they can’t achieve something without having tried at least once first. Persistence is key and if the key doesn’t fit, try another door, another window or just learn to climb the walls. Put the work in, commit and practice integrity and the chances of achieving those dreams will increase greatly. Give yourself permission to aim and miss but be ready to pull yourself together and try again.

To all the naysayers out there, John Lennon’s golden words ring true even today:

‘You may call me a dreamer, but I’m not the only one. I hope someday you’ll join us…’ but until that day, if you can’t say anything positive about our dreams, please don’t discuss them at all!
