I suddenly remembered an old Afghan proverb which I had read a very long time ago and I decided that I must share it instantly.
‘Joy and Sorrow are sisters.’
Initially I wasn’t too sure about what the line really meant. At that point in time, Joy and sorrow being related wasn’t something that made much sense to me. But as they often say, with maturity and experience things become clearer and tend to make more sense and so ruminating over this strange string of words, I now suddenly find myself able to understand and decipher their meaning. This once strange phrase now makes complete sense to me.
There are times, when we are so down and out in life that we find ourselves losing all hope and all will to give things another shot. In those situations we forget that there have also been times, when we have been elated with excitement with the way everything stood at that point in time. At those times of extreme joy we seldom find ourselves thinking about the sorrow, the pain, the anguish, the dejection, the stress and the worry of other times – which we have had to face along the way. We just enjoy and devour every minute of happiness and every minute of joy that we get.
You see, happiness and sadness or ‘joy and sorrow…’ go hand in hand. It’s inevitable and there is nothing we can do about it. It’s too bad that our happiness cannot last forever. But it is also good to know that our sadness will also at some point in time, be replaced by joy and that the sun will always rise again, even when the darkness is most oppressive and unbearable.
Here’s wishing you all a wonderful week ahead.
